From Lab to Line: Experiencing Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Firsthand

On 25th March 2026 GSIA members had the pleasure of visiting Konapharma AG in Pratteln for an afternoon dedicated to practical knowledge exchange and real‑world insight into pharmaceutical manufacturing. The visit offered participants a closer look at what happens on the shop floor, bridging the gap between development, quality, and day‑to‑day production activities. Participants were guided through the GMP operational areas, where the team provided detailed explanations of the manufacturing processes and standard operating procedures used in daily production. Key processes showcased during the visit included fluid bed pelletizing, capsule filling, tablet compression with coating, and Konapharma’s newly installed single‑pot granulation technology. Seeing these processes in action provided valuable context, even for experienced industry professionals, and highlighted the practical considerations that shape pharmaceutical production. What made the visit particularly valuable was the open and engaging dialogue. Participants from different professional pharmaceutical backgrounds shared questions, observations, and experiences, united by a shared curiosity and a common goal of advancing pharmaceutical manufacturing. The discussions went beyond technology, focusing on real challenges, best practices, and opportunities for continuous improvement. GSIA would like to sincerely thank Konapharma AG for welcoming the group and for the openness with which their team shared expertise throughout the afternoon. On a Thrusday afternoon - the SSIP members get the opportunity to have an insight into the dispensation of a large range of drugs (around 2000 different drugs) in a plastic trips marked with the date & time , as well the patient name. More than 10’000 patients are delivered by Medifilm and get on a weekly base their drugs organised and packed by day/time. The process is well established in good reception - storage - dispensing - control/verification of each drug strips. With the help of dispensing roboter around 40 employees ensure daily the preparation and the control of each strpis before the delivery to the patient or pharmacy. We thanks the leadership Team of Medifilm to have hosted us and take the time to answer the many questions of our SSIP members

68th General Assembly of the GSIA at the Swiss Tropical Health Institute in Allschwil

The 68th General Assembly convened at the Swiss Tropical Health Institute in Allschwil, drawing a turnout of over 92 members who participated in the election of 4 new board members and a new president.

With over 90 attendees, the event commenced with a private tour of the Swiss Tropical Health Institute in Allschwil, led by Prof. Burri and his team. The General Assembly took place in the Restaurant ZicZac in Allschwil. Key agenda items included the election of 4 new board members (Andrea Zocchi, Raluca Turcu, Gregory Holtzhauer and Vanessa Malagnino) to replace outgoing board members Frédéric Zwahlen, Hansruedi Keller, Daniel Monney and Andreas Stöckli. Reto Brügger was elected as the new president of the society, tasked with defining its future strategy alongside the newly appointed board. Finally, Audrey Luginbuhl, who acted 4 years as board member of the GSIA plus additional 17 years as member of the board of the GSIA foundation, has been awarded as honorary member of the GSIA.
The conclusion of the assembly featured a gathering at the same venue, where the attendees enjoyed a delightful meal and engaging conversations.

67th General Assembly of Swiss Society of Industrial Pharmacists

67th General Assembly of the GSIA at the EuroAirport in Basel.

On May 4, 2023, this year's General Assembly of the Society of Swiss Industrial Pharmacists (SSIP) took place at the EuroAirport in Basel.
More than 60 participants took the opportunity to have a private tour of the Cargo Terminal warehouse, a new state-of-the-art facility especially in terms of temperature-controlled goods, where around 115,000 tons of freight are loaded and shipped every year. The General Assembly then took place in the Salon des Aviateurs directly at the EuroAirport. In particular was the election of a new Board member, Peter Tiefenböck, who will newly be responsible for the relationship and coordination with the ETH in Zürich.

The conclusion of the event then took place at the Restaurant Schützenhaus Basel, where we ended the evening with a fine meal and good conversation.

GSIA – NEW YEAR Event 2023

On the last day of January 2023, the SSIP organised an event at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Muttenz. More than 70 members could easily fit in one of the Auditoriums, in order to get insight in some current research performed by the professors in pharmaceutical technology.

After this more academic part feeding our brain with new impulses, all attendees were invited to join the Cube Lounge on the 12th Floor, with a wonderful view on the Rhine and the Basel City. Food and drinks were served and supported the guests for conversation between old and new colleagues, as well the Team of the University of Applied Sciences.

Thanks to the FHNW to make this nice event possible.

Erstens kommt es anders, zweitens als man denkt – PharmApéro 2022

Ausgelassene Stimmung, langsam füllt sich der Raum mit jungen Leuten. Die Technik wird installiert und nach einer Weile ist auch ein Ton von der Videoschaltung zu hören. Der Event kann starten.

Das Panel der Speaker ist unerwartet kleiner, kurzfristige Ausfälle erlauben eine spontane Improvisation zum Thema Berufseinstieg, nachdem die Interessierten einen Überblick zum Thema Pharmaindustrie von der GSIA bekommen haben. Spontan entwickelt sich ein Diskussionsforum mit dem Publikum und den Vortragenden. Die Arbeit in einem Startup, einem Interessenverbande und einer grossen Pharmafirma werden verglichen, erläutert und hinterfragt. Die Zeit vergeht im Nu und viele der angefangenen Diskussionen werden beim Apéro weitergeführt. Ein tolles Publikum, wir freuen uns auf nächstes Jahr und bedanken uns bei der swissYPG für die Kollaboration
